Researchers at the University of Oxford have found that students who stopped practicing math after GCSEs have a low quantity of gamma-aminobutyric acid— a chemical that acts as a trophic factor during brain development. 

Engaging in mathematical activities such as solving numerical problems, researchers see strong neural health and the formation of new brain cells. This activity sharpens cognitive abilities and helps the young mind connect ideas as well as develop logical and abstract thinking.
